Optimise the trip, not the ticket
Saving on a fare and then paying more for four nights in the wrong area is a net loss. Look at the flight and the accommodation together and decide where the money is best spent for the trip you actually want.
On short city breaks the hotel is often the larger line; on long-haul beach trips the flight usually dominates. That tells you where flexibility pays.
Shoulder season does most of the work
The weeks either side of peak season typically keep the weather while removing the crowds and the peak pricing on both flights and rooms. It is the single most effective decision available to a flexible traveller.
Costs people forget
- Airport transfers at both ends, particularly for early departures
- Baggage fees added at the airport rather than online
- Resort or city tourist taxes charged on arrival
- Card and currency conversion charges
- Travel insurance, which is cheaper bought early than after something changes
Currency and payment
Where you are offered a choice, paying in the local currency rather than your own usually avoids a poor conversion rate applied at the point of sale. Check what your own card charges abroad before you travel.
