How to Find Cheap Hotels
Where the real savings are when booking a room — and what to ignore.
Area first, price second
The cheapest room in the wrong neighbourhood usually costs more once you add daily transport and lost time. Decide what you want to be near — the old town, the beach, a station — and only then compare rates within that area.
In cities with good public transport, one or two stops out from the centre is often the sweet spot for value.
Refundable or prepaid
Prepaid, non-refundable rates are cheaper because you take the risk. They make sense when your dates are certain. If there is any chance of change, the flexible rate is usually worth the difference, especially for a trip booked far ahead.
Read the review count, not just the score
A 9.4 from twelve reviews tells you far less than an 8.6 from two thousand. Look at how recent the reviews are as well — hotels change management, and a refurbishment or a decline shows up in the newest comments first.
Timing
City hotels are driven by business demand and events, so weekends are often cheaper. Beach and resort hotels are driven by school holidays, so midweek matters less than the season. Check whether a large conference or festival overlaps your dates before assuming a price is unusual.

Do star ratings mean the same everywhere?
No. Star classifications are set nationally and vary widely. Guest review scores are a more consistent guide to the actual experience.
Should I choose breakfast-included rates?
Compare the difference against local café prices. In some destinations it is excellent value; in others it costs more than eating out.
