How the route connects

Mumbai is reached from Malta with one or two stops. The Gulf hubs are the shortest routing in practice, and Istanbul is a common European alternative with good frequency.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM) handles international arrivals at Terminal 2. Terminal 1 serves some domestic flights and is a short but separate transfer, so leave time when connecting onwards.

Arrival timing matters here

A lot of long-haul arrivals into Mumbai land between midnight and 4am. That is fine if your hotel expects you, but it affects the first night's booking and the taxi fare, so check the arrival time before you compare fares on price alone.

Traffic in Mumbai is heavy for most of the day. A hotel near the airport, Bandra or Lower Parel will feel much closer than the distance suggests compared with staying in Colaba.

Season and onward travel

November to February is dry and the most comfortable time to be in the city. The monsoon from June to September is intense in Mumbai specifically — it is the wettest of India's major cities — and is worth planning around rather than through.

Mumbai is the natural gateway for Goa, with frequent short domestic flights as well as trains down the Konkan coast.
