How you get there

There is no nonstop service, so the journey is a European or Gulf feeder followed by a long-haul sector. Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Munich and Rome all appear regularly on this route.

Total travel time is commonly fifteen to twenty hours. An overnight long-haul leg that lands in Bangkok in the morning is generally the kindest option for the first day.

Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles almost all long-haul arrivals and connects to the city by Airport Rail Link. Don Mueang (DMK) is the low-cost airport and is mostly relevant if you are continuing to the islands or to another Asian city on a budget carrier.

Switching between the two airports takes an hour or more in traffic, so avoid tight self-transfers between them.

Seasons and monsoon

November to February is the dry, cooler season and the busiest window for European visitors. March to May is very hot, and the rainy season from roughly June to October brings heavy but usually short afternoon downpours rather than washed-out days.

If you are heading onwards to the islands, note that the Andaman coast and the Gulf coast have different rainy seasons — the wettest month on Phuket is not the wettest month on Koh Samui.

Making the stopover work

Because the trip already requires a connection, a one- or two-night stopover in the hub city is often available for little or no fare increase. Compare a through-fare with a longer layover against two separate tickets before you book.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Malta to Bangkok take?

Typically fifteen to twenty hours in total including the connection, depending on the hub and layover length.

Which is the best hub to connect through?

Gulf hubs usually offer the widest choice and convenient overnight timings; European hubs can suit travellers who want a single alliance or a daytime first leg.

When is the best time to visit Bangkok?

November to February is the dry, cooler season. The rainy season runs roughly June to October and generally means short heavy showers rather than constant rain.

Can I add a stopover?

Often yes, and at little extra cost, because the route already connects. Compare the through-fare with a long layover against booking two separate trips.
